What would you have done?

I can't believe I am asking this, because I am 28 and this seems like a question a teenager woudl ask but here it goes. I have two dear friends, and one is 23 while the other is 29. My 23 y/o friend works with this very attractive, built, dark man who is 23 as well. They have communicated through his friends at work and gone one a few group dates. He randomly texts her, but nothing tooround him. Now, be not fooled, my 23 y/o friend is strong and very independent, but this is what happened. MY mother, 29 y/o friend and myself went out to eat,m and after my friend went to the bathroom she asked me if that was the guy my other friend liked. He was with a girl and laughing and touching her quite a bit, and I. passed by, and I was not sure. I had invited my 23 y/o friend over to eat with us after she got off work, and we walk straight past him, and she saw him and then sat down, and began to cry, and he got up immediatly after we passed him. My friend told me that he was going to be with a friend today, but the minute she start to cry I went up to him and said, "Please do not play my friend. She is a nice girl." then I turn around and walk away. HE text her about the confusion that she was just a friend, and ask if she was mad. I feel like he did lead her on by saying he wanted to date her, and I feel he did play her. My friend was upset that I told him off, and understandably it was none of my concern, but I saw her crying, and nobody makes my friend cry. Any opinions would be great, but I know I did a bad thing, but I just can't help feeling something is off. Any answers would be appreciated. Nothing vulgar or aggressive.though.
